Project Management Skills - Tools and Techniques for Project Planning, Implementation, Monitoring and Evaluation
Overview: A project is a temporary endeavor to create a unique product, service or result, and given a particular project’s objectives, activities, resources and constraints, project management is the process of applying specialized knowledge, skills, tools and techniques to attain those objectives. Project management is thus not confined to civil engineering, but is applicable to any sector and endeavor where identifying, monitoring and managing resources to achieve a specific objective is required.

The Project Management Institute’s PMBOK (Project Management Body of Knowledge) Guide provides an overview of knowledge, tools, techniques and practices that are applicable to most projects, and can enhance chances for a successful project outcome. ASM’s courses provide additional in-depth knowledge on selected "best-practice" project management tools and techniques (plus an awareness of their limitations) as well as in-class practice to develop "how-to" competency-level skills.

Benefits
: Individuals who enhance their project management knowledge in best-practice tools and techniques, and hone skills through competency-based training have a competitive career advantage over those whose credentials simply attest to theoretical-level knowledge.

Audience:

  1. Students in business/project management
  2. Individuals already certified as CAPMs and/or PMPs, but who desire additional knowledge about - and skill in applying - these tools and techniques
  3. Project employees
  4. Project stakeholders
  5. Experienced project practitioners who lack formal training in these project management tools and techniques

Project Management Skills Training Program
Description:  The basic methodology employed is a series of mini-lectures by the instructor - using PowerPoint slides and class notes - to present a topic concept and technique. Each topic presentation is immediately followed on with a hands-on practical application exercise by the participants - sometimes individually, but for the most part as a member of a team, with several small groups working concurrently. The case modules are stand-alone anecdotal media for illustration, exercise, presentation and practice, utilized to emphasize and acquire skill in the tool/technique. Subsequently, selected participants present their results in a plenary session, which are then discussed and lessons learned are summarized, facilitated by the instructor.
This is a progressive and modular training program, covering practical aspects of Project Management, and divided in 4 independent modules:
  • Module 1 - Logical Framework: This module was designed to familiarize participants with the Logical Framework and related techniques – i.e. problem and objective trees, and work breakdown structure – for project planning, scheduling, budgeting, implementation monitoring and evaluation. This workshop reviews the purpose, advantages and limitations of Logical Frameworks. It then outlines a systematic methodology for developing a logframe; and provides some basic “hands-on” experience in its application.

  • Module 2 - Critical Path: This module reviews the advantages and limitations of Gantt charts for project planning, scheduling and implementation monitoring. It then outlines a best practice approach that integrates the Gantt chart with a related critical path method and provides some basic “hands-on” experience in their application. It concludes with a competitive project simulation game that reinforces key critical path network concepts for managing and monitoring project implementation performance.

  • Module 3 - Line of Balance: This module introduces Line of Balance (LOB) - a “best practice” Just-in-Time system for repetitive-type project planning, scheduling, budgeting, implementation monitoring and evaluation. This workshop reviews the purpose, advantages and limitations of Line of Balance. It then outlines the methodology - based on an extension of critical path analysis - together with worksheets and formulas for planning and monitoring project performance; and provides some basic “hands-on” experience in its application.
    Prerequisite
: Module 2 (Critical Path) or equivalent knowledge.

  • Module 4 - Earned Value Analysis: Earned Value Analysis (EVA) is the “best practice” system advocated by the international Project Management Institute, and is now mandatory for planning and monitoring U.S. government agency projects. This module reviews the advantages and limitations of Earned Value Analysis. It then outlines an innovative “quick and easy” methodology together with a worksheet and software package – EVA-2006 Desktop Calculator - for computing EV ratios and displaying project status in monitoring project performance, and provides some basic “hands-on” experience in its application. It concludes with a competitive project implementation simulation game that reinforces key Earned Value concepts for managing and monitoring project implementation performance. Prerequisite: Module 2 (Critical Path) or equivalent knowledge.
